Apple Crumble: The Ultimate Comfort Dessert
When the weather starts to cool down and the days become a little shorter, there's nothing more comforting than a warm, homemade apple crumble. This classic dessert is a crowd-pleaser, offering the perfect balance of sweet and tart apples, combined with a buttery, golden, and crumbly topping. Whether you're hosting a cozy dinner or just want a treat to enjoy with a cup of tea, apple crumble is the ultimate comfort food.
Why Apple Crumble is the Perfect Dessert
Apple crumble is simple yet indulgent. Unlike more complicated desserts that require precise techniques, apple crumble allows you to get creative with the ingredients and the final product is always delicious. It's versatile too! You can make it with different types of apples, adjust the sweetness to your liking, and even experiment with adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg.
The beauty of apple crumble lies in its texture—soft, spiced apples at the bottom, topped with a crunchy, golden crumble that will have you reaching for seconds.
Ingredients:
Here is what you will need to make my apple crumble - serving is for about 4-6 people
For the apple filling:
4 apples
1 tsp vanilla
4 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp butter
Pinch of salt
For the crumble:
1 cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup cold butter
Instructions:
Preheat your oven at 350F/175C, ensuring it is ready for the crumble to bake evenly.
Prepare your apples. Peel, core, and cut/dice the apples. Place the apples in pan with the vanilla sugar, butter, cinnamon, and pinch of salt. Cook down the apples for 5 minutes. (Should release some liquid). We want the apples to be caramlized but not too soft as they will bake in the oven as well.
For the crumble, take a separate bowl and combine the flour, sugar. Add in cold diced butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the flour. The mixture should be crumbly, not a dough (if you press together it should stick, but not stay together).
Transfer the apples into a baking dish. The evenly spread the crumble mixture over the apples, making sure to cover them completely. The more uneven and rustic the crumble looks, the better!
Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown. You might notice a delicious aroma filling your kitchen—this means you're on the right track!
Allow the crumble to cool slightly before serving. It’s best enjoyed warm, straight out of the oven, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Tips for the Perfect Apple Crumble
Apple variety: The apples you choose make a big difference in the final flavour of your crumble. Use a tart variety like Granny Smith for contrast with the sweet crumble topping, or a sweeter variety like Gala for a more mellow flavour.
Butter tips: Make sure your butter is cold when preparing the crumble topping. This helps create a flakier, more crumbly texture.
Spices and add-ins: Feel free to add your own twist to the recipe! You can stir in some chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans for extra crunch, or throw in a handful of dried fruit such as raisins for added texture and sweetness.
Serving suggestion: While it's perfect as-is, apple crumble is delicious when served with vanilla ice cream, custard, or whipped cream.
